Bad Magics — Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of music does Bad Magics cover?

Underground and independent hip-hop primarily — boom bap, abstract, jazz rap, conscious, Southern underground, and everything adjacent. We follow the music wherever it goes as long as it’s honest and crafted with intention. If you’re looking for chart coverage, we’re probably not your spot. If you’re looking for the album that changes how you hear everything else, you’re in the right place.

How do I submit music for review?

We accept submissions from independent artists and labels through our Submit Music page. Please include a streaming link, a brief bio, and some context about the project. We receive a high volume of submissions and cannot respond to every one, but we listen to everything that comes in. If we write about it, we’ll reach out directly. Please do not follow up more than once — we appreciate your patience.

Do you accept paid reviews or sponsored coverage?

No. Every review on Bad Magics reflects the honest opinion of the writer. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage under any circumstances. If you’re interested in advertising or brand partnership opportunities that are clearly labeled as such, visit our Advertise page.

How does the Bad Magics Store work?

Our store carries two kinds of product: Bad Magics branded merchandise and physical music from independent artists we cover and believe in. Branded merch is printed on demand and ships within five to seven business days. Artist merchandise and physical music ships according to the individual artist or label’s timeline, which we’ll always note clearly on the product page.

I’m an artist. Can I sell my music through the Bad Magics store?

Possibly, yes. We selectively partner with independent artists to carry their physical product — vinyl, cassettes, limited pressings, and merch. We take a 20% commission on each sale and handle the storefront. If you’re interested reach out through the Contact page with a link to your music and what you’d like to sell. We only carry artists whose work we can honestly stand behind.

What is Bad Magics Radio?

Bad Magics Radio is our curated stream — mixes, playlists, and continuous programming built entirely around the music we cover. No algorithm, no ads interrupting the music, no playlist designed by committee. You can find it under the Radio tab. It runs continuously and updates regularly with new mixes and themed sessions.

Can I write for Bad Magics?

We are always interested in hearing from writers who have genuine knowledge of and love for underground hip-hop. We’re not looking for people who want a platform — we’re looking for people who have something specific to say about specific music. If that’s you, send three writing samples and a brief note about what you’d bring to the site through the Contact page.

How do I stay updated on new content?

The best way is the newsletter. We send one email per week — new reviews, upcoming features, radio picks, and store arrivals. No spam, no selling your information, just the music. Sign up at the bottom of any page.

You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube where we post short-form content between features.

Do you cover live events?

When we can, yes. We’re building toward Bad Magics curated live events in partnership with independent venues — underground showcases featuring artists from the blog. Sign up for the newsletter to be the first to know when those happen in your city.

I have a question that isn’t answered here.

Use the Contact page. We read everything and respond to what we can. Please be patient — this is an independent operation run by people who also have a deep personal music library to maintain.

Still digging. — Bad Magics
