What We Are
Bad Magics is an independent underground hip-hop platform covering the artists, albums, producers, and scenes that the algorithm was never designed to find. We write long-form reviews, conduct real conversations with artists, and document the culture that moves beneath the surface of what’s trending — not because we’re against what’s popular, but because we’re committed to what’s true.
We’ve been here since the crate was the only search engine. We’re still here because the music is still worth it.
What We Cover
Underground hip-hop in all its regional variations. Boom bap. Abstract. Jazz rap. Southern underground. West Coast independent. Detroit. Philly. Baltimore. New Orleans. The one producer working out of a city nobody is watching yet who is making some of the most important music being made anywhere.
We cover new releases, classic albums that never got their proper due, and everything in between. If it’s honest, if it’s crafted, if somebody put their whole self into it — we want to write about it.
What We Don’t Do
We don’t chase clicks. We don’t write about something because it’s trending. We don’t give five stars to an album we don’t believe in because the label sent us a nice email. We don’t sanitize our opinions to stay in anybody’s good graces.
If we write about it, we mean it. That’s the only promise we make and we take it seriously.
The Store
We built the Bad Magics store because we believe in putting money directly into the hands of independent artists. We carry vinyl, cassettes, limited pressings, and merch from artists we actually cover and believe in. When you buy from the store you’re not feeding a streaming algorithm — you’re going direct to the source. That matters to us and we think it matters to you.
Bad Magics Radio
The stream runs continuously. Curated mixes, themed playlists, late night sessions, Sunday morning selections. No algorithm. No skip ads. No playlist designed by a committee. Just music chosen by people who love it, for people who do too.
Who’s Behind This
Bad Magics was founded out of a genuine love for hip-hop that never made it to the front page and never needed to. This is an independent operation. No corporate backing, no VC money, no editorial direction from anyone with a financial interest in what we say. Just the music and the people willing to write honestly about it.
