The Return of Clean
Burrowed against the infamous cement barrier that currently separates Israel and Palestine in Bethlehem rests the latest art installation from street artist Banksy. Titled the “Walled Off Hotel,” and promising the “worst view in the world,” the experiential art show is a fully functional hotel that will be open for reservations.
Using both form and abstraction, Hale’s works convey the struggle to process, reconcile and structure an overwhelming flood of imagery and data. Hale accumulates distortions, compresses them into a stratum, then cracks them open again and layers other images and shapes until the significance, or the narrative of each layer, disappears into another.
Doel is something of a paradise for some of Europe’s best-known graffiti artists. Some residents even encouraged street artists to turn up, in an attempt to create an open-air gallery.
Art duo Os Gêmeos revisited San Francisco’s Luggage Store Gallery and left behind a painting at the top of the building, in the very same spot they painted a previous mural in 2003. The Sao Paulo-based artists spray painted a new, gallery-commissioned piece over their last mural.
